The Narrative guys

General Rules

  • All models and wargear must be WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get).  Proxies are not allowed.

  • Models not produced by Games Workshop, as well as significant conversions must be approved prior to event.

  • Armies that contain any models that do not meet a 3 color paint minimum (No, 2 colored dots do not count) will receive a -2 to the roll deciding who goes first.

  • You must bring any relevant books or electronic versions of all rules for your army, and make them available to your opponents.

  • Warlords must be announced on the list.

  • No “play as” armies, faction key words must match modeling. This includes custom chapters playing as canonical chapters.

  • No fortifications.

army composition guidelines

  • 1 Battalion detachment (battle-forged) with power level greater than 100.

  • Individual mission will determine power levels of your army at game time. You may or may not use your whole force. example mission levels are 50, 75, 100, or 125 power level.

Overview

TNG narrative games are not limited to the “narrative” missions listed in the Core Rules. Deployments, mission rules, command points and stratagems will all be specific to each The Narrative Guys event. Players will be able to tailor their force to the deployment, mission and stratagems available to them by using Power levels. For example, a player whose forces are defending a fortified position may wish to remove transports from their mission list in favor of adding more troops, while the attacker may wish to bring drop pods instead of rhinos for their assault. This will allow players to bring units that fit the battle, like commander would.

A player’s overall force is determined by the event and in most cases will be a Battle-Forged Amy with 1 or more Detachments. There is a minimum Power Level for this Battle-Forged Amy, but there is no maximum! You may bring units to fill every slot in the Detachment(s) allowed. For example, in the Open Narrative format, players have a single Battalion Detachment and can bring 3 HQ, 6 Troops, 6 Elites, 3 Fast Attack, 3 Heavy Support and 2 Fliers. The total power level of all of those units may far exceed the minimum for the event. When the player receives their mission, including a Power Level for the mission, they will select a subset of those units that are less than or equal to the total.

General Rules

  • Units in a player’s force must have all the same faction keywords (see below).

  • Each unit must be a valid unit for its entry. No under strength units or disallowed wargear.

  • All units must be modeled "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG), with the exception of wargear that is on the basic unit profile. The models primary weapon should be visibly modeled.

  • Faction key words must match modeling. No ‘plays as’ armies. This includes build-your-own Space Marine chapters playing as a canonical chapter (like Ultramarines), for example.

  • All models must be painted to table-top standard, i.e. all parts of the model should be painted, details should be painted in appropriate colors, etc. “Three color standard” is a good guideline, but attempts to circumvent this rule will result in models being rejected for the event.

  • All models must have a completed, decorative base. Textured paints are fine, as are custom resin bases that are then painted. The whole model should look complete.

  • Your army should have a unified look-and-feel. We are looking for forces that look like they belong together. Sub-units and specialists may have different schemes, but it should be obvious to the observer. What we are avoiding is the “two armies put together in one list” look.

  • No fortifications. Some tables will include fortifications and their Power Level will be taken into account during the mission assignment.

Open Narrative

  • 1 Battalion Detachment (Battle-Forged Amy) with a Power Level greater than 100

  • Individual missions will determine the power levels of your army at game time. You may or may not have use of your whole force. Example mission levels force deployment are Power levels of 50, 75, 100 or 125

Faction Keywords

A narrative army represents single force within its own story, set in the 40K lore. Each player represents a single faction Warlord battling for glory or survival in the grim dark future. To represent this in the game you must select units in your force that have all the same faction keywords. There are a list of Faction Keywords are not enforced, allowing you to ignore those keywords. A good example of this is the Faction Keyword Fallen for Cypher. Cypher has Chaos and Fallen as his Faction Keywords. Fallen is one of the Faction Keywords that is not enforced. Any army that shares the Chaos Faction Keyword can include Cypher.

You only need to match the Faction Keywords that are present in the unit entry. For example Fabius Bile’s Faction Keywords are Chaos and Heretic Astartes, but he doesn’t have <Mark of Chaos> or <Legion>. A Chaos Space Marine Squad has the Faction Keywords Chaos, <Mark of Chaos>, Heretic Astartes, and <Legion>. Fabius Bile can be in the same army as the Chaos Space Marine Squad because they share the Faction Keywords Chaos and Heretic Astartes, even if he doesn’t match <Mark of Chaos> and <Legion> as Fabius Bile doesn’t have a Mark of Chaos or Legion Faction Keyword.

There are a couple of flat out exception units. Units whose Faction Keywords span across armies. These are rare and explicitly called out. One example is the Tech-Priest Enginseer who has the Faction Keywords Imperium, Astra Militarum, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Cult Mechanicus. In the Faction Guidance list below this unit is called out as an exception that can be used in an army with the Astra Militarum, Adeptus Mechanicus, or Cult Mechanicus Faction Keywords.
